How Much Raw Food to Feed Your Dog (Calculator & Chart by Weight)
“How much raw food should I feed my dog?” is the first question every new raw feeder asks. The good news: it's simple maths. This guide gives you the percentages, a ready-to-use chart by weight, and the adjustments that matter.
The simple rule: 2–3% of ideal body weight
Most adult dogs eat about 2–3% of their ideal adult body weight per day, split across one or two meals:
- 2% — less active, prone to weight gain, or need to slim down
- 2.5% — a good starting point for the average adult dog
- 3% — very active, working dogs, or hard keepers
Raw feeding chart by weight (adult dogs, ~2.5%/day)
- 5 kg dog → ~125 g/day
- 10 kg dog → ~250 g/day
- 15 kg dog → ~375 g/day
- 20 kg dog → ~500 g/day
- 30 kg dog → ~750 g/day
- 40 kg dog → ~1,000 g/day
Feeding at 2% or 3%? Just scale the numbers down or up.
Puppies eat much more
Growing puppies need roughly 5–10% of their current body weight per day (higher when young, tapering as they grow), split across 3–4 meals. Weigh weekly and adjust. Shop puppy food.
The check that beats any calculator
Numbers get you started; your dog's body tells you the truth. Every two weeks, run your hands over the ribs: you should feel them easily but not see them. Ribs disappearing? Trim portions. Becoming visible? Add a little. For dogs carrying extra weight, see our weight-management range.
Seasonal & lifestyle adjustments
Cold weather, high activity and entire (un-desexed) dogs push needs up; desexed, senior or couch-loving dogs need less. Melbourne winters in particular can lift requirements — see winter raw feeding.
