Big Dog BARF Sensitive Skin raw dog food patties - a diet option for itchy dogs during Melbourne's pollen season

Itchy Dog in Spring? Melbourne Pollen Allergy & Diet Guide (2026)

Every year, from the last weeks of winter, our Moorabbin store starts hearing the same sentence: "he's scratching again". Paws chewed pink, ears warm and smelly, belly rash, that relentless 3am licking. If your dog's itch runs on a calendar rather than all year round, you are almost certainly dealing with seasonal atopic dermatitis - and late July and August is exactly the right time to get ahead of it, not October when it is already miserable.

Melbourne's allergy calendar

Dogs react to the same airborne allergens we do, on a similar timetable:

  • August to September - tree pollen. Cypress, plane, olive and wattle. The first flare of the year usually sits here.
  • October to December - grass pollen. Melbourne's big season, driven by ryegrass. This is peak scratching, and northerly winds off the grasslands make the worst days.
  • Summer - moulds and storm days. Thunderstorm outflows dump concentrated allergen loads in minutes.
  • Autumn and winter - dust mites and indoor allergens. Lower level, but it is why some dogs never fully clear.

The key difference from human hay fever: dogs absorb pollen mainly through the skin, especially thin-skinned areas like paws, armpits, groin and muzzle. That is why an allergic dog scratches instead of sneezing, and why physical removal of pollen works so well.

Is it pollen, or is it food?

Worth being honest here, because guessing wrong costs months. Environmental allergy is far more common than true food allergy.

Clue Points to pollen / environment Points to food
Timing Seasonal - starts and stops with spring Year-round, no seasonal pattern
Age of onset Usually 1 to 3 years old Can start at any age, often under 1
Where it itches Paws, belly, armpits, face, ears Ears and rear end, often plus gut symptoms
Other signs Worse after walks or windy days Loose stools, wind, frequent ear infections
Response to diet change Partial - diet supports the skin barrier Often clear improvement in 8 to 12 weeks

Many dogs have both, which is the frustrating part: a food-sensitive dog has a lower itch threshold, so pollen season tips them over the edge. Reducing the food load can be enough to keep them under it.

And before anything else - rule out fleas. A single flea can sustain an itch in a sensitised dog, and flea allergy dermatitis peaks in exactly the same warm months. See choosing a flea treatment and Moxiclear vs Advocate.

The diet side: what actually helps

1. Cut the protein list down

Fewer ingredients means fewer possible triggers, and it makes any trial interpretable. A single-protein diet with one carbohydrate source is the goal - not a "limited ingredient" food with four meats in it. Browse single protein dog food, and read our single protein feeding guide.

2. Choose a novel protein

Allergy is a response to something the immune system has already met, so proteins your dog has never eaten are a fresh start. In Australia that usually means kangaroo, wild boar, turkey or fish, rather than chicken and beef.

Shop the wider ranges: kangaroo dog & cat food, salmon & fish, sensitive stomach & skin.

3. Add omega-3 - properly

EPA and DHA from marine sources dampen inflammation and strengthen the skin barrier. This is one of the best-supported dietary steps for canine atopy, but it needs a real dose and 8 to 12 weeks to show. Read omega-3 for dogs and cats and green-lipped mussel benefits, then try freeze-dried NZ green lip mussels or freeze-dried baby salmon as a daily topper.

4. Do not sabotage it with treats

This is where most elimination trials fail. A chicken-based dental chew undoes eight weeks of kangaroo. Match your treats to your trial protein - Blackdog Kangaroo Jerky, Black Hawk Freeze Dried Kangaroo or Prime100 Prime Cut Kangaroo. No table scraps, no flavoured chews, and check what the neighbours are handing over the fence.

How to run an elimination diet (the short version)

  1. Pick one novel protein and one carbohydrate. Nothing else - no treats, no chews, no flavoured supplements.
  2. Run it for a full 8 to 12 weeks. Skin is slow.
  3. Score the itch weekly out of 10 and photograph the worst area. Memory is unreliable; photos are not.
  4. If it improves, reintroduce one old ingredient at a time for two weeks each to find the culprit.
  5. Do this with your vet, especially if there are secondary skin or ear infections that need treating first.

The non-diet half (do these too)

  • Rinse paws and belly after every walk. Plain water and a microfibre towel. Highest impact per minute of any step here.
  • Walk early morning or after rain. Pollen counts peak on warm, windy afternoons.
  • Mow before it seeds and keep your dog off freshly cut grass for a few hours.
  • Wash bedding weekly in hot water; it is a pollen reservoir.
  • Bathe fortnightly with a soothing, soap-free shampoo during the season.
  • Keep flea and tick cover current right through spring and summer.

When to see a vet, not a shop assistant

Diet and management help genuinely allergic dogs, but they are not a treatment for infection or severe atopy. Book a vet visit if you see broken or weeping skin, a foul smell or discharge from the ears, hair loss in patches, sudden facial swelling, or an itch bad enough to stop your dog sleeping. Modern prescription options for canine atopic dermatitis work well and there is no reason for a dog to suffer through a season. This article is general information only.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my dog get itchy every spring?

Seasonal itching that starts in August or September is usually atopic dermatitis triggered by airborne pollen. Melbourne's tree pollen builds from late winter and grass pollen peaks from October to December, and dogs absorb these allergens through the skin and paws rather than by sniffing them.

Is my dog itchy from food or from pollen?

Timing is the clue. Itching that appears and disappears with the seasons points to environmental allergens; year-round itching, especially with ear infections or gut symptoms, is more likely food-related. A vet-guided 8 to 12 week elimination diet is the only reliable way to confirm a food trigger.

What can I feed a dog with itchy skin?

A single novel protein diet with no overlapping ingredients, plus omega-3 from fish or green-lipped mussel. Kangaroo, wild boar, turkey and fish are common choices in Australia because most dogs have had little exposure to them.

How long before a diet change helps itchy skin?

Allow 8 to 12 weeks. Skin turns over slowly and omega-3 needs time to build up in the skin barrier, so judging a new diet after two weeks tells you nothing.

Does washing my dog's paws actually help?

Yes, and it is the most underrated step. A quick rinse or wipe of the paws and belly after walks removes pollen before it can be absorbed, which directly reduces the allergen load on the skin.
