Big Dog single protein kangaroo raw dog food patties - lean Australian kangaroo as a novel protein for dogs and cats

Is Kangaroo Good for Dogs & Cats? The Novel Protein Guide

Kangaroo has quietly become the protein Australian pet owners reach for when nothing else is working. It is on our shelves in raw patties, fresh rolls, air-dried, freeze-dried, dry food and treats - and it is almost always recommended for the same reason: the dog or cat has reacted to something else.

So is roo actually better, or is it just different? Both, depending on your pet.

What is in kangaroo meat?

Kangaroo is a lean red meat with a distinctive nutritional profile:

  • Very low fat - typically around 2 to 3%, where lamb and beef sit far higher
  • High protein and high in haem iron, plus zinc and B12
  • Naturally higher in conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) than most farmed meats
  • Wild-harvested from free-ranging animals - no grain finishing, no feedlots, no routine antibiotics

That leanness is the whole story of kangaroo, for better and worse.

Who kangaroo suits best

Dogs and cats with food sensitivities

Allergies develop through repeated exposure, so the value of a protein for an itchy or reactive pet is largely about what they have not eaten. Most Australian pets have been raised on chicken, beef and lamb. Kangaroo is a clean slate for them, which is why vets and nutritionists reach for it in elimination diets. More on running one properly in our spring allergy and diet guide and novel and single-protein raw diets.

Overweight pets

At 2 to 3% fat, kangaroo delivers a lot of protein per calorie. For a desexed indoor cat or a dog carrying extra kilos, that is exactly the right trade. Pair it with the numbers in our weight management range.

Owners who care about footprint

Wild-harvested kangaroo, taken under state government quotas, avoids land clearing, irrigated feed crops and methane-heavy production. If sustainability drives your buying, roo is the strongest option on an Australian pet food shelf.

When kangaroo is the wrong choice

  • Very active, working or underweight dogs. Lean meat plus high energy demand means you will struggle on kangaroo alone. Choose a complete formulation with added fat, or a fattier protein.
  • Puppies and kittens on plain roo mince. Growth needs precise calcium, phosphorus and fat - use a complete, life-stage-appropriate diet, not butcher's mince. See puppy food and kitten food.
  • Pets already eating roo for years. If kangaroo has been the staple, it is no longer novel. Wild boar, turkey or fish become the fresh options instead.
  • Fussy eaters. Roo has a strong, gamey smell. Some pets love it; some walk away. Buy the smallest pack first.

Which format should you buy?

Format Best for Trade-off
Frozen raw Maximum nutrition, full BARF feeding Freezer space, thawing, cold-chain delivery
Fresh roll Easy portioning, great for elimination diets Fridge life once opened
Air-dried Raw-style nutrition, no freezer, travel Higher price per kg
Dry food Budget and convenience, big dogs More processed, added carbohydrate
Freeze-dried treats Training and toppers on a single-protein trial Treats only, not a diet

How to switch to kangaroo

Introduce over 7 to 10 days, mixing an increasing share into the current food. If you are switching specifically to test for a food sensitivity, go strict: roo only, matching treats only, for a full 8 to 12 weeks. Half-measures produce results you cannot interpret. Our 7-day raw transition plan covers the mechanics for dogs, and the cat version is here.

Frequently asked questions

Is kangaroo good for dogs?

Yes for most dogs. Kangaroo is a very lean red meat, high in iron and protein and low in fat, and because relatively few pet foods have used it historically it works well as a novel protein for dogs with sensitivities.

Can cats eat kangaroo?

Yes. Kangaroo suits cats well as a high-protein, low-fat red meat, and it is available in raw, air-dried, freeze-dried and dry cat foods. Cats need taurine, so choose a complete commercial formulation rather than plain roo mince.

Is kangaroo too lean for dogs?

It can be for very active or underweight dogs, since kangaroo is only around 2 to 3% fat. Complete commercial kangaroo diets add fat back to balance this; plain roo mince fed alone does not.

Is kangaroo hypoallergenic for dogs?

No protein is truly hypoallergenic - allergies form through exposure. Kangaroo is a useful novel protein because most dogs have eaten little of it, but a dog fed roo for years can develop a sensitivity to it too.

Is kangaroo meat sustainable and ethical?

Australian kangaroo is wild-harvested under state government quotas from free-ranging animals, with no feedlots, land clearing or routine antibiotics. It has a notably lower environmental footprint than farmed red meat.
